<h3>Refinery treatment processes</h3>
<p>Crude oil and its cuts are mainly composed of hydrocarbons. Refinery treatment processes are</p>
<p>separation and transformation techniques enabling to extract its different fractions and to produce</p>
<p>several products ,from gases to asphalts and coke. Depending on the crude oil source,</p>
<p>the cuts have not the same quality and quantity. An industrial unit designed for crude</p>
<p>distillation is generally calculated and dimensioned for a defined feeding crude oil.</p>
<p>In fact, all new oils have to be analysed and characterized (number and quality of cuts mainly)</p>
<p>so that mixtures are prepared to feed the industrial unit with the characteristics needed.</p>
<p>Therefore, by mixing different oils, it is possible to feed the refinery with an almost</p>
<p>constant composition mixture and have only one industrial unit to process all crude oils.</p>
<p>The ASTM standard proposes a procedure to characterize crude oil. This standard enables</p>
<p>to compare the obtained results <span style="color: var(--vamtam-primary-font-color);">wherever the analysis is done.</span></p>

<h3>Distillation</h3>
<p>Distillation is a process including heat and material transfers in order</p>
<p>to separate one or several products of relative different volatility.</p>
<p>The separation is carried out by a chaining of vaporizations and condensations.</p>
<p>The theoretical base is that a vapor produced from a mixture is in equilibrium with</p>
<p>the mixture liquid phase and has generally a higher composition in the most volatile compound.</p>
<p>The separation is carried out in a column (packed or plates column) designed to get the best</p>
<p>contact and material exchanges between the climbing vapor and the falling liquid into the column.</p>
<p>This separations can be done in continuous or discontinuous (batch) process.</p>
